The General Directorate of Civil Defense, through its search-and-rescue team, recently wrapped up their involvement in the White Operation drill, a strategic exercise conducted in Tunisia.
The four-day drill was a key component of the bilateral cooperation in civil protection and civil defense between Saudi Arabia and Tunisia. The exercise was designed to bolster the proficiency and experience of the international search-and-rescue squads.
Participants engaged in rigorous simulations, preparing them to respond to disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. This collaborative effort underscores both countries’ commitment to enhancing the safety and security of individuals and safeguarding property in regions vulnerable to natural disasters.
The Saudi team has been distinguished with the “Heavy” category international classification by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group, representing the highest accolade the group bestows. Historically, the Saudi team has been actively involved in international relief operations, providing crucial assistance in the aftermath of floods, disasters and various global calamities.
In a recent collaboration, the Saudi and Tunisian search-and-rescue teams extended their expertise beyond field exercises to conduct workshops and seminars. These sessions were dedicated to advancing preventive strategies against potential hazards and enhancing public safety awareness.
This initiative was part of the 2024 International Civil Protection Day celebrations, under the banner “With technology, we strive to protect you,” emphasizing the role of technological advancements in civil defense and public safety.
Col. Mohammed Al-Hammadi, spokesperson for the Saudi Civil Defense, spoke to Arab News about the Kingdom’s involvement in the recent preventive simulation exercises aimed at disaster readiness.
He said that it was a strategic component of Saudi Arabia’s preventive measures, which are designed to protect lives from catastrophic events.
Al-Hammadi highlighted the commitment of the Saudi Civil Defense to maintaining high professional standards in safeguarding lives and properties, ensuring their protection against various risks in times of peace, as well as during disasters and conflicts.
He stressed the importance of minimizing damages and fostering a culture of preventive awareness, supported by a team of qualified professionals and state-of-the-art equipment, in collaboration with other relevant organizations.
Al-Hammadi noted the successful management of a simulated scenario involving an earthquake and tsunami by the Saudi and Tunisian teams.
