“Avatar: The Way of Water” continued to top the North American box office for the seventh consecutive weekend, taking in an additional $15.7 million, according to distribution company estimates.
It was a generally quiet weekend, mostly marked by the release of the blockbuster Hindi film “Pathan” which broke into the top five and the re-releases of “Everything Everywhere at Once” and “Fableman’s”, both nominated for Oscars.
Avatar 2’s run at the North American box office is matched only by the first Avatar, and in the past 25 years, they’ve only been bettered by Titanic (which stayed at No. 1 for 15 weeks). All three directed by James Cameron.
At the global level, the movie “The Way of Water” generated revenues of about $ 2.1 billion, surpassing “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, to become the fourth highest-grossing film in history (Cameron directed three of them).
In second place was Universal’s “Boss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which grossed $10.6 million in its sixth weekend. The animated film has taken in more than $140.8 million in North America and was recently made available for home streaming as well.
Sony’s “A Man Cold Auto” came in third place, with $6.8 million from 3,957 screens. Horror film “Megan” crept into fourth place, taking $6.4 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $82.3 million.
The Indian movie “Pathan”, starring Shahrukh Khan in his first role in five years, settled in fifth place, taking $ 5.9 million from only 695 screens.
Neon also released the horror movie “Infinity Ball,” written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg and starring Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgard, to 1853 screens after its Sundance debut. It earned an estimated $2.7 million.
The romantic comedy “Maybe Do,” starring Diane Keaton, Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, grossed $562,000 from 465 screens.
