Recently, the World Health Organization stated that the outbreak of monkeypox poses a health threat of grave concern but is not currently a global health emergency.
Monkeypox is endemic to Central and West Africa, and it first appeared among humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, when a 9-year-old boy contracted it before the disease disappeared.
But it has sparked global concern after more than 200 confirmed cases of the virus have been detected in more than 20 countries since early May, most of them in Europe and North America.
Experts believe that the spread of this epidemic in Europe may indicate new mutations that are able to spread outside rainy tropical environments.
