‘Minions’ hits the box office with $108.5 million

Families are eager to see the new “Minions” movie this weekend in North American theaters.

Universal Pictures said Sunday that “Minions: The Rise of Gru” has generated nearly $108.5 million in ticket sales from 4,391 North American screens.

And by the end of the Fourth of July holiday on Monday, he will likely have made more than $127.9 million.

The movie is on track to become the biggest-ever opening over the July 4th weekend, breaking the previous record set by “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which grossed $115.9 million in its first four days in 2011.

The animated movie “Minions: Rise of the Guru” had grossed $202.2 million in sales in 61 markets worldwide as of Sunday.

“It’s a great start,” said Jim Orr, president of Universal, local distribution company.

The film’s voice cast includes Steve Carell, who plays the Guru, Alan Arkin, Michelle Yeoh, and Julie Andrews.

Universal and Illumination were hugely successful with the five Despicable Me films, dating back to 2010 and grossing more than $3.7 billion at the global box office.
