San Antonio, Texas, officials confirmed that the bodies of 46 dead immigrants were found in a trailer on Monday evening.
According to the BBC, the San Antonio incident is considered one of the deadliest human smuggling incidents along the US-Mexico border.
And it quoted Charles Hood, San Antonio Fire Chief, that emergency teams responded to the report at 18:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Monday, and found at least 46 people dead in an abandoned truck in the suburbs of San Antonio, Texas.
San Antonio, about 250 kilometers (150 miles) from the US-Mexico border, is a major transit route for people smugglers. Trucks are often used by human traffickers to transport illegal immigrants after meeting them in remote areas once they are able to cross into the United States.
San Antonio’s climate is extremely hot in the summer months, with temperatures on Monday reaching 39.4 degrees Celsius (103 degrees Fahrenheit), and it is suspected that the victims likely died of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
