The wreck of the US destroyer Sammy B, which engaged a superior Japanese fleet in the largest naval battle of World War II, has become the deepest shipwreck ever discovered.
The USS Samuel B Roberts, known as the Sammy B, was identified on Wednesday split in two on a 22,916-foot (6,985-meter) cliff.
That makes it 1,400 feet deeper than the USS Johnston wreck, the previous deepest wreck discovered last year in the Philippine Sea.
American explorer Victor Veskovo said: “It has been an extraordinary honor to locate this incredibly famous ship, and in doing so, we have had the opportunity to retell the story of heroism and duty for those who may not know about the ship and the sacrifice of its crew.”
The explorers explained that the historical records of the wreck’s location were not very accurate, and for this, the deepest side-scanning sonar was used, which was installed and operated on a submarine.
