Billionaire Elon Musk has warned America that it may face a fate similar to that of Japan, if the declining fertility rates there do not improve, according to his opinion.
In a conversation with owners of his electric car company, Tesla, he confirmed that “as soon as the birth rate starts to drop, it starts to accelerate,” according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.
Last year, Japan saw its population decline by more than 600,000, as a result of low fertility rates and a rapidly aging population.
Musk warned that “if this trend continues, Japan will disappear completely,” expressing his hope that this will not be achieved.
The head of SpaceX also predicted that China might face a similar fate to Japan, due to its policies on family planning.
China’s fertility rate continued to decline, even as the country allowed families to have up to 3 children, after abandoning the one-child policy, according to one analysis.
Elon Musk noted that “as societies tend to become wealthier and less religious, couples have fewer children.”
