The messaging application “Telegram” announced the launch of a paid subscription plan for its users this month
The founder of the application, Pavel Durov, said in a post, yesterday, Friday, that users who choose the new subscription service “Telegram Premium” will get an upper limit for chats, media and file downloads, according to the “TechCrunch” website.
“The only way to allow our most demanding fans to get more while keeping our existing features free, is to make these high limits a paid option.”
Durov stressed that the step to introduce a paid subscription was to ensure that the Telegram application remained funded primarily by its users, not advertisers.
It was reported that the cost of subscribing to the “Telegram Premium” service is $4.99 per month.
The “Telegram” application, along with its counterpart, “Signal”, witnessed an increase in the number of its users, after concerns emerged from the American “WhatsApp” platform, related to maintaining privacy.
Currently, Telegram has 500 million monthly active users, becoming one of the 10 most downloaded applications in the world.
