The Mona Lisa was shaken but unharmed on Sunday when a visitor to the Louvre tried to smash the glass protecting the world’s most famous painting before smearing its surface with cream in an apparent climate publicity ploy.
The perpetrator was a man disguised as an old woman who jumped from a wheelchair to attack the glass.

A photographer wrote a post-accident video clip showing a Louvre employee cleaning the glass: “Maybe it’s just crazy to me. He smears the glass with cream, throws roses everywhere before security stops him.”
Another video posted on social media showed the same employee finishing cleaning the painting, while another worker removed a wheelchair in front of the da Vinci masterpiece.
“Think about the earth, people are destroying the earth,” the man, who was wearing a wig, said in another video as he was led away from the museum with his wheelchair, indicating that the motive for the accident was likely related to the environment.
