Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, strongly condemned “a number of Israeli extremists storming Al-Aqsa today, Sunday, under the protection of large numbers of occupation forces.”
Aboul Gheit stressed, according to a statement by the Arab League, that “this move constitutes a new violation of the status quo and represents a major provocation to Arab and Islamic sentiments, and could result in igniting the situation in the city of Jerusalem and other areas.”
Counselor Jamal Rushdi, spokesman for Aboul Gheit, stated that “the storming of Al-Aqsa Square, as part of what is known as the “Flags March”, is an irresponsible act aimed primarily at achieving internal gains on the Israeli arena, and achieving the goals of the extreme right that seeks to abolish all Palestinian presence in Occupied East Jerusalem and the restriction on the pioneers of the Temple Mount for goals that have become known to all.”
The official spokesman quoted Aboul Gheit as appealing “to the influential forces globally and the international community in general to pressure Israel to stop these provocations that inflame religious sentiments, increase the level of tension and fuel the cycle of violence in the occupied Palestinian territories, and that would push everyone into the midst of religious confrontations with unimaginable consequences.”
