A couple in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand have filed a lawsuit against their only son and wife for not having a grandchild after 6 years of marriage.
Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, 61 and 57, said they spent all of their savings on raising their son and paying $65,000 for his training as a pilot in the United States, in addition to his lavish wedding, in a five-star hotel, an $80,000 luxury car and a honeymoon abroad.
“My son has been married for six years, but he and his wife are not planning to have a child,” Prasad said. “At least if we had a grandson to spend time with, our pain would be bearable,” he added, according to the BBC.
The couple’s lawyer told The National that the couple had demanded financial compensation “because of psychological brutality”.
He added, “It is a dream for every parent to become a grandmother. They have been waiting for years to become grandparents.”
The parents are asking their son in damages estimated at $650,000, if he does not give birth to a grandchild within a year.
The court is expected to hear the couple’s petition on May 17.
