Apple has reportedly agreed to settle a long-running 6-year lawsuit, accusing it of deliberately slowing down iPhone 4S phones after downloading the iOS 9 update in 2015.
Under the settlement, Apple agreed to allocate $20 million to compensate some poorly performing phone owners with $15 each, according to Mac Rumors.
The class action lawsuit against Apple was first filed in December 2015 by plaintiffs representing a group of iPhone 4S owners from New York and New Jersey.
The lawsuit accused the “American tech giant” of falsely marketing the “iOS 9” update as providing improved performance on devices that support it, including the iPhone 4S.
At the time of promoting iOS 9, Apple raised the slogan “The most advanced mobile experience. Now is more,” and promised that it “will bring users a more responsive performance.”
Customers who believe they are entitled to the $15 compensation from Apple must submit an “advertisement” that they have downloaded iOS 9 or any version of it to their iPhone 4S, and that they experienced a significant decrease in performance as a result, and they are entitled to Get a down payment of $15 per applicable device.”
A website will be created to enable customers, who believe they are eligible for settlement, to submit a form, and provide their name, email, and (if applicable) phone serial number.
