Rosalie Rock, the mother of American comedian Chris Rock, spoke for the first time about the incident that actor Will Smith slapped her son on stage at this year’s Oscars.
And she confirmed in an interview with Billie Jean Shaw on “WIS-TV”, last Friday, that she initially thought that the slap was prepared in advance, but found out the opposite after Smith “started using profanity” towards her son.
“When he slapped Chris, he slapped us all, he really slapped me,” said Chris Rock’s mother.
Rosalynn Rock added that after watching her son slapped on TV, she called him and told him she was proud of how he reacted.
Will Smith surprised viewers around the world in a live broadcast by slapping Chris Rock on the Oscar stage, after the latter mocked the bald head of Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith’s wife, because she had alopecia.
After the slap, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned Will Smith from attending the Oscars for 10 years.
When asked what she thought of the Academy’s punishment for Will Smith, Chris Rock’s mother said she didn’t think his award should have been taken away from him, and the actor could have been taken out of the ceremony without disrupting the event.
Will Smith won the Oscar ceremony on March 27, in which he slapped Chris Rock, the “Best Lead Actor” award for his role in the movie “King Richard”.
