A big fire in the traditional “Souk Al Mubarakiya”

Al-Mubarakiya heritage market in Kuwait was exposed to a fire, Thursday, that devoured dozens of shops, while firefighting teams are still in the process of putting out the fires.

Souk Al Mubarakiya is an old heritage market located in the center of the capital, and it is one of the important tourist attractions in Kuwait City, and it is bustling daily with visitors from all over the country.

The General Fire Force confirmed that 8 of its teams are continuing their work in fighting the fire that broke out in the market, using its mechanisms and equipment, explaining that the losses have so far been represented by “the burning of dozens of neighboring stores.”

The force’s public relations officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Reda Al-Salman, said that the fire was reported at 3:20 pm on Thursday, indicating that it initially affected 20 stores, before the fire spread due to the sticking of the shops to each other, most of which contain goods from Perfume and leather.

He noted that “the ceilings of the shops in the market made the fire spread at great speed, as it is a heritage,” according to KUNA.

He added that the firefighting teams “play their role according to an action plan, despite all the major obstacles related to the market location and the crowding in the Mubarakiya area,” calling on the public to stay away from the site of the fire and make way for the firefighting and emergency mechanisms that deal with the fire, to do their work.
He also reassured the public that “the firefighting teams have taken all precautionary measures against the fire, and a cordon has been established around the site to prevent it from spreading to the rest of the shops and other complexes.”
