Sotheby’s and Christie’s cancel Russian art auction in London

Auction houses “Sotheby’s” and “Christie’s” have abandoned the Russian art auction next June, in light of recent developments in and around Ukraine.
This information was officially confirmed on Wednesday, March 16th, by spokesmen for both groups.

A Sotheby’s spokesman said the auction house has canceled the June Russian art auction. As for a Christie’s spokesman, he explained, “All markets are very important to Christie’s. We still believe in them within the framework of applicable laws, regardless of geographical regions. Although the Russian sector occupies a limited place in our total sales, we We had to respond to our customers’ requests and political developments in various regions of the world, so we took a decision to cancel the Russian art auction, which was supposed to be held next June in London.”

The Russian Art Week in London takes place twice a year, in June and December. Sales of Russian art at Sotheby’s last auction brought in $23.6 million in revenue. The proceeds of “Creatie’s” resulting from the sale of the masterpieces of the company “Faberge” amounted to 14.7 million dollars.
