Russia blocks Facebook, begins blocking Twitter

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications and Information Technology in Russia (Roskomnadzor) announced today, Friday, the blocking of “Facebook” and the start of blocking “Twitter” in Russia.

The statement noted that “Since October 2020, 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media and information sources have been recorded by Facebook. In recent days, the social network has restricted access to the accounts: Zvezda TV, RIA Novosti and Sputnik ), (Russia Today), (Lenta.ru) and (Gazeta.ru).

The authority noted that the above-mentioned restrictions (applicable to Facebook and Twitter) are prohibited by Federal Law No. 272-FZ “On Measures to Influence Persons Involved in Violations of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, Rights and Freedoms of Citizens of the Russian Federation”, which was adopted, among other things. , to prevent violations of the basic principles of the free flow of information and unhindered access by Russian users to Russian media on foreign Internet platforms.
