Poland is waiting for permission from the European Commission to impose a ban on Russian coal

Poland’s Prime Minister Matsz Morawiecki announced at a joint press conference with Council of Europe President Charles Michel that Poland is ready at any time to part with coal from Russia, but that the European Commission must accept this.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called on Wednesday for a ban on the import of Russian coal in response to its military operation in Ukraine, adding that Poland was negotiating with Australia over coal supplies to abandon imports from Russia.
“Poland supports the imposition of the strongest possible sanctions against Russia and part of the sanctions package should be a blockade of various types of hydrocarbons from Russia, including oil, gas and coal,” Morawiecki said, after meeting with European Council President Charles Michel.
“We once again appeal to the European Commission to take a decision on the ban on Russian coal,” the Polish prime minister added.
He continued, “Today I spoke with the Prime Minister of Australia [Scott Morrison] to import coal from there to Poland,” noting: “After that, Poland will immediately stop importing Russian coal.”
