5 children killed in Australia by wind blowing their rubber toys

Five children were killed and others injured Thursday in Australia, after their inflatable castle-shaped toy was blown away by winds, police said.

The incident occurred during an event to celebrate the end of the semester at an elementary school in Devonport, Tasmania.

The Tasmanian police, which opened an investigation into the incident, stated that the children fell from a height of nearly ten meters, and four of them, aged between 10 and 12 years, were instantly killed, while a fifth died in hospital from his injuries.

Scenes shown by the media showed policemen collapsed because of the “difficult and painful scenes.”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison regretted the “horrific” incident, and said, “The children were enjoying their time outside with their parents and it turned into a terrible tragedy, during this time of the year, it is heartbreaking.”

Meteorologists had expected “light winds” and sunny weather at the beginning of summer in the area on the north coast of Tasmania.
