Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall has signed up for a new Robert De Niro comedy film. The actress, famous for playing Samantha Jones in the iconic HBO sitcom, will be starring in About My Father, based on the real life of stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalo, Deadline reports.
The film will follow the story of Maniscalo telling his old-school Italian father about his plans to propose to his all-American girlfriend. This leads to the parents meeting and clashing over their differences, although by the end of the weekend they will work things out and get along.
Maniscalo’s fiancé Ellie will be played by actress Leslie Bibb, with Cattrall playing Ellie’s mum, a powerful United States senator named Tigger.
As well as being a popular stand-up comedian in the US, Maniscalo is an actor who has starred alongside De Niro in The Irishman. He was also recently announced as part of the ensemble voice cast for the Super Mario movie coming from Nintendo and Illumination.
Meanwhile, Cattrall is not returning for the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That, while her former co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are.
The 10-episode series will feature main characters Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York Goldenblatt expanding their social circle, and unlike the original, there will be people of colour.
HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys previously suggested Parker and King “didn’t want to tell a story with all-white writers or an all-white cast” because “it’s not reflective of New York”.
