The Somali Theater presents its first two locally directed films since its founding in 1967

The National Theater of Somalia screened the first two films of a Somali director, for the first time since its construction in 1967 as a gift from the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China.

On September 22, the National Theater of Somalia screened the first two short films, “Hoos” and “Date from Hell” by Somali director Ibrahim CM.

The director of the National Theater in Somalia, Abdul Qadir Abdi Yusuf, considered this event as a “historic night for all Somalis,” noting that the theater seeks to be a space for expression for local artists.

It is worth noting that cinema halls in Somalia witnessed a golden age, but they have closed their doors since the beginning of the civil war that swept the country in 1991.

The National Theater in Somalia reopened in 2012, but only two weeks later it was destroyed by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabab organization (banned in Russia).
