Media reports indicated that the Austrian police found the body of an 89-year-old woman who died more than a year ago, and her son mummified the body to conceal her death.
According to the police, the son embalmed his mother’s body to continue receiving government benefits.
The police statement stated that the 66-year-old son kept his mother’s body, and it is believed that his mother had dementia and died in June, according to what was published by the British newspaper, The Guardian.
The suspect admitted during interrogation that he used ice bags to freeze his mother’s body in the basement of the house after her death, to prevent the spread of odor, and then wrapped the body in bandages to absorb any bodily fluids.
As for how the incident was exposed, the credit goes to the postman who was behind this, as he asked to meet the person receiving the benefits and when the son refused to do so, the postman informed the police, and the police found the body on Saturday 4 September.
It is reported that the son received an amount of about 50,000 euros (about 59,000 US dollars) since June 2020 from the allowances sent to his mother.
