Haiti’s civil protection authorities said on Tuesday that the death toll from the powerful earthquake that rocked the country on Saturday had risen to 1,941.
Heavy rains and torrential rain today hampered efforts to search for survivors of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake and help those who lost their homes or those in need of food and water.
She added that “more than 9,000 injured were recorded in the various hardest-hit provinces, including 6,800 in the south,” noting that “nearly 100,000 homes were damaged by the earthquake.”
The 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday morning at about 8:30 (12:30 GMT), 12 km from Saint-Louis-de-Sud, 160 km from the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the US Seismological Center.
At the beginning of 2010, Haiti witnessed a devastating earthquake that left about 250 thousand people dead, in which the United Nations recorded the deaths of 102 of its employees, representing thirty different countries, which is the largest single loss suffered by the international organization in its history.
