Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh is turning her hand to animation once again, with the first trailer for the actress’ new Pixar movie.
Turning Red focuses on 13-year-old Mei Lee (played by Rosalie Chiang), a teenager with a rather unusual ability – every time she gets too excited or anxious, she transforms into an enormous red panda. Unfortunately, her emotions are heightened quite often.
The first trailer for the new animated movie, gives us a clear example of what causes Mei to get anxious, as she tries to settle down into completing some quadratic equations only to receive a note from another student telling her that her mother is outside.
Sure enough, Mei’s protective, if not slightly overbearing, mother, Ming (Oh), is lurking behind a tree outside the school and when a security guard approaches to ask her to leave, Ming gets a little violent.
Stressed out Mei suddenly turns into a red panda in a huge cloud of pink smoke, causing her to flee across the rooftops with Ming in pursuit.
Mei finally manages to calm herself down back home and turns back into herself – only for the excitement of changing back to send her right back into red panda form.
Turning Red is directed by Domee Shi, who picked up the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her 2018 Pixar short Bao, about a lonely Chinese-Canadian mother who gets another chance at motherhood when a steamed bao bun she makes comes to life.
Oh will also soon be starring in a less family-friendly project in the form of Netflix comedy series The Chair, in which the actress plays Dr Ji-Yoon Kim, the first person of colour to chair the English department at the fictional Pembroke University.
