Media revealed that John McAfee, founder of McAfee anti-virus software, who recently committed suicide in a prison in Barcelona, Spain, according to preliminary investigations, had also attempted suicide months ago.
McAfee’s body was found in Brians 2 prison in Barcelona province on June 23, after the decision of the Spanish National Court announced his extradition to the United States, which accused him of tax evasion.
According to local judicial authorities, preliminary investigations indicate that McAfee committed suicide, while the Supreme Court of Catalonia told “Novosti” that the results of the medical autopsy will be revealed soon, and that a suicide note was found in his cell.
Vanguardia reported that McAfee had attempted suicide on February 28, and his attempt was thwarted after a prisoner reported it to the guards. At that time, McAfee was transferred to the medical department and then to the hospital. Upon leaving the hospital, the doctors recommended the prison administration to go to a psychiatrist, but this doctor confirmed that McAfee does not need his services. McAfee was then transferred to another prison.
For her part, McAfee’s widow announced, after a meeting with the prison administration, that she did not believe her husband’s suicide story, and also demanded that two tests be conducted for the cause of his death.
McAfee, 75, was arrested in October last year at Barcelona airport when he was on his way to Istanbul, after the United States issued an international arrest warrant against him.
The United States accused him of tax evasion on the millions of dollars he earned from promoting cryptocurrency, consulting, lecturing and other business activities. On June 23, McAfee learned that the Spanish National Court had agreed to extradite him to the United States.
In mid-June, McAfee made statements during court hearings, in which he denied all the accusations against him in the United States, which he described as “politicised.” McAfee also said that if he is extradited to the US authorities, he has no doubt that he will spend the rest of his days behind bars.
