Monitoring a positive relationship between corona and cannabis use

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said that many countries have witnessed a rise in the use of the drug cannabis (cannabis) during the Corona virus pandemic.

According to a report by the office, about 275 million people used drugs around the world last year, while 36 million people suffered from drug abuse complications.

In surveys of health workers in 77 countries, 42% said cannabis use has increased. It was also noted an increase in the abuse of narcotic drugs for non-treatment purposes, in the same period.

The report indicated that over the past 24 years, cannabis use has increased fourfold in some areas, while the percentage of adolescents who consider cannabis to be harmful has decreased by 40%.

Ghada Wali, the executive director of the office, said, “The perspective of low risks of drug abuse has been associated with higher rates of drug abuse, and the results of the office’s report in 2021 reflect the need to bridge the gap between perspective and reality, to educate young people and protect public health.”
