German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Washington to settle the dispute over the implementation of “Northern Stream-2”, a project that Washington is working to block and aims to extend two gas pipelines from Russia to Germany.
This came according to what German media reported today, Friday, and the Handelsblatt newspaper quoted sources as saying that the negotiations between the German and American sides will cover a wide range of topics, but the main interest will focus on discussing the Russian “North Stream-2” project.
According to the newspaper’s sources, no date has been set for the increase, but it is expected to take place in July or August of this year.
The newspaper pointed out that “German officials presented a set of proposals to defuse the crisis (with America) over the project.” This will be the first visit of the German chancellor to the United States after the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential election.
And “North Stream-2” is a Russian project to build two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters annually, from the Russian coast, across the bottom of the Baltic Sea, to Germany.
Almost all of the project has been implemented, but it faces obstacles due to American pressure, as Washington has imposed several packages of sanctions on the project, and it is also threatening the companies participating in the project with new sanctions.
Last week, on the sidelines of the Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the completion of the first pipeline of the “North Stream-2” project, while the second pipeline of the project will be completed within two months.
Regarding the date of pumping gas into “North Stream-2”, Putin said that the timing of the start of supplies in “North Stream-2” will depend on the German regulator.
