Libyan official: America cares about our country for fear of the increasing Russian and Turkish presence

The head of the Libyan National Security Committee at the National Conference, the previous year, Abdel Moneim Al-Yaseer, affirmed that “the United States of America wants to maintain its influence in the region at the lowest possible costs.”

Al-Yaseer explained that “America is showing great interest to Libya, fearing the increase in the Russian presence in the country, as well as the Turkish expansion and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s attempt to change the map of influence in the region,” according to the Libyan newspaper, “Akhbar Libya 24”.

Al-Yaseer also talked about “the American threat issued by the Security Council towards those obstructing the Libyan elections,” and stated that “it is difficult to expect the United States to be 100% serious about the threats it faces.”
For her part, and earlier, the American representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, stressed the need to hold free and fair elections in Libya on December 24 next, warning anyone who obstructs or undermines the elections planned in the roadmap of the Forum for Political Dialogue. Greenfield also pointed to “the importance of protecting human rights and combating corruption in Libya, especially as the Libyan people have made progress towards national reconciliation, but they want elections.”

She said, “It is time for the Libyan leadership to clarify the constitutional basis for the elections, approve the required legislation, and not postpone the elections.”
