Disney’s Cruella lands first reactions to 101 Dalmatians prequel movie

The first reactions are in for Disney’s origin story Cruella and if you didn’t love the eternally stylish villain before, prepare to make a new place in your heart for Ms de Vil.

Set during the 1970s in London amid the backdrop of the punk scene, Cruella is as stylish as you’d expect, with many lauding its aesthetic and soundtrack.

Starring Emma Stone as the future Cruella and Emma Thompson as the fashion house boss who leads her down a dark path, the film has been praised for offering some much-needed escapism.

Digital Spy’s Movies editor Ian Sandwell described the movie as “a lot of fun,” but added that “there are questionable things with Cruella’s backstory that make it hard to pair up with the villain we hate to love”.

He added: “Anyone concerned about the need for an origin story for Cruella de Vil will find things to be frustrated about in #Cruella, but there’s no denying it has some serious style, incredible costumes and some Very Good Dogs.”

One comparison that came up in a lot of the first reactions was to 2000’s classic The Devil Wears Prada.

Fandango’s Erik Davis described the film as a “Disneyfied Devil Wears Prada,” while Rotten Tomatoes’ Joel Meares said it was “Devil Wears Prada meets The Witches meets Death Becomes Her,” which sounds absolutely incredible.
