The average birth weight is about 3.4 kg in the normal condition, but there are some special cases, where mothers give birth to babies with unexpected extra weight. Excess birth weight may not pose any health risks but when the weight is much higher than expected, it certainly raises a lot of eyebrows.
The British newspaper “Daily Mail” published the story of a British woman who gave birth to a baby girl weighing 6 kilograms at birth. Mother Amber Cumberland, 21, had a pronounced protrusion of her stomach during pregnancy, to the point that doctors believed she was pregnant with twins.
Amber gave birth to her baby Emily on April 16, with a weight of 6 kilograms, and is believed to be the second largest baby in the United States of America, with only 2 pounds less than the heaviest baby born in 2012.
“The doctors thought she was a twin during pregnancy because it was so big, although we could only see one through the scanner. We heard it so much that we really started to think that there were other twins hiding in there,” Amber said.
“It became a game when we went to the supermarket to see if we were going to get a comment about how big the belly should appear, and we always did that. And when she was born, Scott (her husband’s) face was white and all the surgeons were looking at each other with shock and laughing, and then they brought her up. To me, and they said:
“Congratulations, I have just a baby girl.”
According to reports, the baby had reached the size of a 36-week-old infant by only the 32nd week.
