Sarah Drew will return as April Kepner on May 6

Grey’s Anatomy star Sarah Drew is set to return to the medical drama in the coming weeks.

The star announced her official return date as April Kepner via her Twitter page, revealing that will appear on Grey’s Anatomy on May 6.

Posting on Twitter, Drew wrote: “We have a date! April is back on @GreysABC Thursday, May 6 at 9|8c on ABC!”

The first time we saw Drew as April on Grey’s Anatomy was in season six – she left her role in the show at the end of season 14. Very few details have been shared about what we can expect from Drew’s guest appearance.

Based on the photo that the star posted alongside her tweet, it looks like April could be reunited with her ex and the father of her child, Jackson (played by Jesse Williams).

Drew isn’t the only former cast member who returned to the show after leaving, with others including Patrick Dempsey, TR Knight, Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane, who all appeared in season 17.

Meanwhile, speaking recently to Digital Spy, Giacomo Gianniotti who plays Andrew DeLuca, explained whether he thinks the show has more life left in it.

He said: “For a show that’s in its 17th, I think we’ve sort of passed [asking the question] at this point. They have created a model and a formula for making this show forever.

“Grey’s Anatomy is [also] always highlighting current events issues and issues that need to be brought to the forefront. So there will never be a shortage of stories that need to be talked about.

“But it comes down to the creatives. It comes down to Ellen, it comes down to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, the creators of the show, and the network if they really want to keep making it or if they want to make room for something new.

“That’s what it really comes down to.”
