Singapore – A man jailed for deliberately coughing on a police officer

A Singapore court has sentenced a 29-year-old man of Indian descent to 14 weeks in prison for deliberately coughing on a police officer who was responding to a domestic violence call.

In September 2020, the police received a help request due to a violent situation in a house, and when the policemen came to the house, Devraj Tamil Silvan, a Singaporean of Indian descent, slapped his girlfriend in the face in their presence.

After he was taken to the police car, Sylvan claimed that he could not breathe, after which the police called an ambulance and took him to hospital.

He repeatedly removed the muzzle, despite multiple warnings by the police and hospital staff, and deliberately coughed several times in the face of the police officer.

Silvan pleaded guilty to charges of using criminal force and abusive words and behavior towards a police officer, and faced up to four years in prison or a fine or both for using force against a police officer.

During the hearing, the court was also informed that he rode his motorcycle in August 2020 despite not being qualified to drive any vehicle between January 2019 and July 2020 of this year, and Slivan will be banned from driving for a period of three years after his release from prison.
