A federal judge has ordered corrections officials and workers to hang cameras on their clothes and install surveillance cameras in five California prisons.
American Judge Claudia Wilcke issued the order due to frequent violations of prisoners with special needs being reported.
The judge gave the prisons 21 days to draw up plans to install the cameras and another 90 days to operate them.
The judge issued her ruling after reviewing dozens of statements submitted by prisoners and human rights lawyers on behalf of the prisoners.
“The court found that the bodypack cameras are likely to improve investigations of misconduct by staff and reduce instances of violations of the rights of disabled inmates,” Wilken writes.
“Some of the incidents involve the use of force against mentally or physically handicapped prisoners even though the disabled prisoners did not appear to pose an imminent threat to the safety of staff or other prisoners,” she added.
