Russian Judiciary Condemns Opponent Navalny of “Defamation”

On Saturday, a Russian court indicted Alexei Navalny, the main opponent of the Kremlin, for “defaming” a former World War II fighter, hours after he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in another case.

“Navalny committed this crime,” Judge Vera Akimova said during the pronouncement of her decision.

The judgment issued against him shall be announced at the end of the session. The Public Prosecution Office requested that Navalny be fined 950,000 rubles (approximately 10,600 euros), provided that a suspended prison sentence for the opponent be converted into a valid one.
