Putin hosts the first post-war talks between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia

Moscow – (Reuters):
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin brought together the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan for the first time since the war that took place between the two countries last year in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, in an attempt to solve the problems that threaten to undermine the agreement that ended the conflict.

An agreement on a ceasefire brokered by Russia last November stopped the six-week conflict between the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces over the mountain enclave and the surrounding area, which kept Azerbaijan’s gains on the ground.

However, tension continued with sporadic occurrences, the continued detention of prisoners of war on both sides, and disputes over how to create a new transportation corridor that crossed the region.

The region is internationally recognized as part of the territory of Azerbaijan, but Armenians as well as Azerbaijanis see it as part of their historical homeland, and the two sides fought a wider war in the nineties due to the region’s overdrive.
