The Oscar-winning actress played the Grand High Witch in the 1990 original, and her portrayal of the character has gone down in cinematic history as one of the most terrifying villains in a children’s movie.
Hathaway was cast as the leader of the worldwide group of witches in director Robert Zemeckis’ recent reboot of Roald Dahl’s classic novel, and while comparisons to Huston are inevitable, the 38-year-old actress is tired of being pitted against another woman.
“I just keep reminding myself that there have been, like, six Batmen and four Jokers and seven James Bonds,” Hathaway told Stellar magazine. “We seem to get a little more into comparisons when it’s two women and we seem to get a little more excited when it’s two men.”
“I’m hoping all this soul searching that we have been doing lately has put us in a place where each performance can be celebrated for what it is,” the Oscar winner added.
Despite the comparisons, Hathaway is a firm believer her performance on screen is “just right” for the reboot.
“Anjelica’s performance is flawless and it’s iconic and it’s just right for the film she’s in. My hope is that my performance is just right for the film that I’m in,” the Les Miserables star shared.
