The former Turkish foreign minister, Yashar Yakis, believed that “it is possible for Turkey to close its military base in Qatar, and it is possible for Ankara to make changes in its foreign policy.”

Yashar Yakis, one of the founders of the Justice and Development Party, said, “Turkey is now among Arab countries that live in a number of differences, but when the Saudi-Qatari relations return to their previous course, it is possible that Turkey will close its military base in Doha.” Al-Arabiya sees its differences with Qatar as family disputes, so it resented the Turkish interference in its internal affairs, and the increasing influence of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Qatar.

Yakis pointed out that “the time has come to improve Turkey’s crisis relations with the Gulf states,” noting that “Ankara is conducting many meetings with officials on this issue, the most recent of which was the meeting that brought together the Lebanese Prime Minister-designate, Saad Hariri, and President Erdogan.” .

In the context of talking about the Syrian crisis, the former Turkish foreign minister said, “The world has left Turkey alone in Syria, and therefore it must hold direct talks with the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad.”

On the new US administration and Ankara’s relationship with Washington, Yakis pointed out that “the arrival of the Democrat, Joe Biden, to the presidency of the United States of America, and the region’s balances that have changed with the Arab-Israeli rapprochement, will force Turkey to change its foreign policies.”
