The chief medical adviser to the British government, Chris Whitty, said Monday that the country is waiting for the worst weeks in the Covid-19 pandemic, while health services face a “difficult time” after deaths and injuries rose to record levels before launching a mass vaccination program.

Deaths due to the virus have now exceeded 81,000 cases in the United Kingdom, which is the fifth largest toll in the world, while more than three million cases of the disease have been confirmed, at a time when Britain has witnessed the emergence of a new mutated strain of the virus, more capable of infection.

Witty warned that the situation will deteriorate for the time being. “The next few weeks will be the worst in this pandemic in terms of numbers,” he said.

“Anyone who is not shocked by the number of people in hospitals, who are seriously ill at this moment and who are dying from this pandemic, I think he did not realize this at all. This is a terrible situation,” he told BBC television. .
