Researchers at the European Commission warned on Monday that about half of the European Union’s territory is currently at risk of drought, while southwestern Europe is suffering from drought due to a severe heat wave, according to the Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

The report said that 46 percent of the European Union’s territory was exposed to the drought warning level, along with 11 percent on the drought alert level, at a time when crops are already suffering from water shortages.
