A luxury Chinese ice cream company has come under fire after a video went viral that shows expensive ice creams that do not appear to melt when exposed to a heat source.
In the video, which has so far been viewed more than 500 million times on the popular Chinese website Weibo, a person places a lighter near an expensive ice cream, which appears to not melt, according to the South China Morning Post.
The company sparked controversy, earlier this week, after revealing that its products do not melt at high temperatures or when exposed to fire, which raised questions about what is in its products.
Videos circulated by netizens showed that the ice cream did not melt when one of the netizens tested it by burning part of it with a lighter, and the report stated that smoke appeared in the video after the ice cream touched the fire and the smell of burning food smelled.
Also, in another clip, the ice cream remained viscous rather than melting and turning into a liquid, as regular ice cream does, when it was placed in a room at a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius after more than 50 minutes.
Internet users wondered what this ice cream called Chicecream, which many in Shanghai called Hermès of Ice Cream, after the French luxury goods manufacturer Hermès, due to the high prices of its products, as some types of ice cream from the first version are sold at 70 yuan (10.50). US dollars) or more.
Shanghai-based Zhong Xue Gao officials stated that “all of its products are in line with the quality standards set by the Chinese National Authority,” according to the South China Morning Post.
In a statement released on Weibo, the company claimed: “The main ingredients of coconut-flavored ice cream are milk, cream, coconut pulp, condensed milk and milk powder. 40% of this ice cream is solids.”
It said it added 0.032g of carrageenan, a seaweed extract, in its 78g ice cream products, which meet national regulations.

Some studies have indicated that carrageenan causes health problems and possibly cancer, although the newspaper, Carrageenan, indicated that it causes cancer is “controversial”.
The manufacturer stated that carrageenan is widely used in ice cream and beverages. “Carrageenan gum helps milk proteins maintain stability,” they said.
Consumers still aren’t completely convinced of how safe ice cream really is and why it is so expensive.
