“The Middle East has always been very appreciative of jewelry and important gemstones,” Rahul Kadakia, head of the global department of jewelry at Christie’s, told AFP.
“We thought it would be good for us to reveal for the first time this diamond in an area that has a lot of important gem collectors,” he added.
Julian Bruni, head of global private sales for jewelry at Christie’s, said that this piece is “the largest white diamond ever to be sold in auction history”, expecting it to fetch “probably $30 million”.
“We have seen great demand in the region over the past few years… The UAE and the Gulf region have always been a major market for unique pieces,” he added.
According to “Christie’s”, the previous record for the largest white diamond was a piece weighing 163.41 carats that was sold in November 2017 for 33.7 million dollars.
Earlier this year, Sotheby’s in London sold the largest ever black diamond, weighing 555.55 carats, for $4.3 million.
