American club supports Russian hockey players
Hockey club “Washington Capitals” posted on Twitter a statement declaring support for the Russian players.
The Washington Capitals have Russian players: goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov, defender Dmitry Orlov and strikers Alexander Ovechkin and Yevgeny Kuznetsov.
Earlier, one of the club’s agents, Dan Melstein, said that Russian hockey players face harassment and discrimination in the United States due to the situation in Ukraine.
“We will give full support to the Russian players and their families,” the club wrote. “We are aware that they are in a difficult situation and we feel it is necessary to help them and their families,” he added.
Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, at the request of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in the Donbass region, which requested Russia’s help to end the attacks of the forces of the Ukrainian regime against them.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the military operation aims to protect people who have been subjected to the attacks of the Ukrainian regime for eight years. To this end, the regime must be disarmed, Ukraine must be rid of Nazism, and all the criminals responsible for the genocide against the people of the Donbass region must be referred. Putin noted that Russia does not want to occupy Ukraine.
