Google Maps contributes to the arrest of an Italian mafia boss in a Spanish town

Spanish police have arrested an Italian mafia boss after he’s been on the run for 20 years in a Spanish town, by tracking him on Google Street View.
The police arrested Gioachino Gamino, a killer listed among Italy’s most wanted gangsters, in Galapajar, a town near Madrid, where he married, changed his name to Manuel, worked as a chef and owned a fruit and vegetable store.

Sicilian police conducted several investigations in their search for the wanted Gamino, 61, who was issued with a European arrest warrant in 2014.

The police were able to locate him precisely through Google Street View, which took a picture of two men talking outside a fruit and vegetable store called El Huerto de Manu, in Galapajar, where they suspected that one of the men looked very similar to Gamino, and were able to confirm his identity.

Gamino was arrested on December 17, but details surrounding his arrest have not been disclosed.

Palermo prosecutor Francesco Le Foy confirmed the details, explaining in an interview with the Guardian newspaper, that “it is not as if we spend our days searching Google Maps to find fugitives, many investigations led us to Spain, and Google Maps helped us confirm our investigations.” .
