About 47 percent of Britons, or nearly one in two, admitted in a survey published on Wednesday that they are unable to prepare the Christmas meal with all its ingredients.

The Christmas meal in Britain usually consists of meat cooked in the oven, seasoned with sauce, and accompanied by vegetables.

And preparing this sauce was the most difficult task for those surveyed, as 81 percent of them ruled out succeeding in making cranberry sauce, and 73 percent said they might not be able to make bread sauce, two of the traditional staples of English cuisine. And 73 percent of them admitted that they are not good at making pudding.

Roast turkey and oven-baked potatoes are what the respondents mastered the most at the Eid meal.

A third of those surveyed reported that no one taught them how to cook, while a similar proportion of respondents indicated that they did not have the space or equipment needed to prepare the meal.

The next 55 percent indicated that they rely on others to prepare meals for them, while 15 percent would completely dismiss the idea of Christmas dinner, and 8 percent intend to eat it in a bar or restaurant.

And 41 percent of those surveyed aspire to learn how to cook a perfect Christmas meal next year.

The survey was conducted by the online supermarket chain Coop and included a representative sample of 2001 people in Britain.
