A rare scene in Jerusalem… A hyena offers its cubs for the first time a fresh meal of venison

One of the most famous nature photographers in Israel documented a rare scene in a bush near Jerusalem of a female hyena offering her cubs for the first time a fresh meal of deer that she had hunted.

Amir Palvan spent years documenting the activities of hyenas throughout Israel, before finally documenting this rare sight in Jerusalem.

“I have been waiting for this moment for more than a decade, as I have been documenting hyenas. This time a hyena came from the West with a whole deer next to it,” Palvan says, according to Israel’s Channel 12.

He added: “The puppies were two months old, which is when they start eating meat. It was clear that they didn’t quite understand what to do with the deer.”

A female hyena was seen carrying the deer she had caught in her mouth and placed it in a small den where her four hungry cubs waited. Some of the puppies did not understand what to do with the deer carcass and played with it at first.

The Israeli photographer said: “It was very surprising to see how the pups, despite their size, are able to move the body of a deer. One of the pups, who weighed two kilograms, was able to move a deer weighing 20 kilograms.”
