The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Facebook research revealed that followers of social media stars, including Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and Charlie D’Amelio, on Instagram, suffer from more negative feelings associated with self-image, which raises questions about The influence of celebrity culture on the Internet.
The newspaper published the leaked research on Wednesday, and used it as the basis for articles it published this month in which it stated that Facebook knows that its applications harm the mental health of some teenage girls and young users.

The research is titled “Instagram Social Comparison” and polled 100,000 people in March and April 2020 in nine countries including the United States, Australia and Brazil.

Facebook spokesman Kevin McAllister said the survey did not ask respondents to name specific accounts, but the researchers found that celebrity accounts were “some of the most followed accounts by people who told us they were exposed to higher and lower levels of negative social comparison on Instagram,” based on internal data. for the company.

He pointed out that the results make sense given that the celebrities whose names were mentioned each have more than 30 million followers, according to “Reuters”.

Facebook researchers noted that the company could partner with celebrities in campaigns to reduce negative comparisons.

These results are important given that “Instagram” contributed to the emergence of influential personalities on social networking sites and made efforts to include celebrities in the application in its infancy.

The researchers concluded that viewing more celebrity content on Instagram was associated with an increased sense of negative comparison.

The researchers revealed that about half of the content that has a following on “Instagram” is for celebrities.
