A bottle of champagne, during a blessing and christening ceremony for the new US nuclear combat submarine Hyman J. Recover (SSN 795), only broke when it was struck a third time by the submarine’s hull.

According to the video released by General Dynamics, the bottle was thrown by Sarah Greenert McNicol, the daughter of Darlene Greenert, the financier of the submarine’s construction and wife of former US Navy chief of staff Jonathan Greenert.

From the video footage, it turns out that the girl managed to break the bottle on the side of the submarine only on the third attempt. The last attempt ended as it should and the bottle broke only after a nearby man whispered advice to the girl.

At the inauguration of various ships and submarines, a champagne bottle was smashed on the side of a new ship as a sign of “good fortune.”
