An elderly Brazilian man who was mistakenly declared dead by paramedics after his motorcycle crashed has been saved by a “miracle” thanks to an alert reporter who filmed him shivering inside a body bag.

The bizarre incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Araguaña, when street food vendor Raimundo da Silva, 71, reportedly began to feel unwell while riding his bike to work.
After da Silva lost consciousness and fell, paramedics were called to the scene. But they declared his death and put his body in a bag.

They then left the crash site to be supervised by the police, who waited for the coroner to arrive. But moments after they left, police officers and a journalist covering the incident noticed the plastic bag moving slightly on its own.

“When I arrived, the bag was already closed,” reporter Giovanni Pereira told Brazilian news outlet G1. In the footage that Pereira filmed, the bag can be seen moving.

“They (the police) opened the bag and I saw a little bubble of air coming out of the corner of his mouth,” Pereira said. “He had a 10-minute CPR to help.”

Paramedics were called to the scene, and da Silva was taken alive by ambulance to the hospital for treatment. No further updates on his health were revealed.

However, paramedics continued to confirm that they had performed CPR on da Silva after arriving at the scene of the accident. They said he was pronounced dead “based on a technical assessment”.

They said da Silva’s medical record would be checked to try to understand what had happened.

Noting that he was “in the right place and at the right time”, Pereira said he believed “it was a miracle”.
