Sources in the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the success of the initial tests of a nuclear submarine carrying ballistic missiles, developed for the army.

According to the sources, “Prince Oleg’s Borei-A submarine had launched towards the sea from one of the Russian army’s military bases on May 30, and recently returned to the base after undergoing the initial testing phase.”

Russian media had indicated earlier that the submarine was planned to be delivered to the Russian army on July 25 this year, but the operation was postponed until the fall to subject it to additional tests and to ensure the complete readiness of all its systems.

Russia began developing this submarine within the framework of the government project 955А in 2014, and within this project, it had developed another nuclear submarine, “Prince Vladimir”, which entered service for the army on June 12, 2020, and work is also underway to develop 3 submarines of the same class: “Suvorov”, “Emperor Alexander III” and the submarine “Prince Bagarsky”.

The Borey-A submarines operate on nuclear power, and each submarine carries 16 “Bulava” ICBMs, as well as 533 mm combat torpedoes.
