The son of a wealthy Washington DC lawyer and a classmate of Barack Obama’s daughters, he led the vote by a group of Oxford University students to remove a portrait of Elizabeth II.

British newspapers reported on Wednesday that Matthew Katzman, 25, graduated from Stanford University and is now a doctoral student in “complexity theory”.

As president of Magdalen College’s middle common room, Katzman made a proposal to remove the Queen’s portrait from the area, arguing that it was “supposed to be a place where everyone feels welcome” while the Queen represents “modern colonial history”.
It turns out he is the son of commercial attorney Scott Katzman, whose Washington, D.C. mansion is worth more than $5.5 million, according to the Daily Mail. Prior to joining Stanford University, Katzman attended Sidwell Friends School, a prestigious Quaker school in the US capital and a favorite of the President’s children.

Malia, Obama’s eldest daughter, was a student at Sidwell around the same time as Katzman. Her younger sister Sasha is also a graduate, as are Chelsea Clinton and Nancy Reagan and children of Richard Nixon and Theodore Roosevelt.

The removal of the image has already been condemned by the British government, through Education Secretary Gavin Williamson.

Williamson wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: “Oxford students removing the Queen’s image is absurd. She is a symbol of what is best in the UK. During her long reign she has worked tirelessly to promote British values such as tolerance, inclusivity and respect around the world.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson endorsed Williamson’s statement on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Magdalen College’s president, Dina Rose, has disavowed the photo’s removal and said participating students “do not represent the college,” but said the institution “strongly supports freedom of expression and political debate” and that it will be “safely stored” elsewhere.

The reign of Elizabeth II saw Britain dismantle its globe-spanning empire – a process that began just a few years before her ascension to the throne in 1952. The handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997 left London with only fourteen overseas monarchies, primarily the islands and provinces such as Gibraltar.
