The King of Sweden celebrates his grandmother’s legacy at a new royal exhibition

In celebration of Sweden’s National Day, King Carl XVI Gustaf officially inaugurated an exhibition about his grandmother titled “Daisy – Crown Princess Margrethe, 1882-1920” at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

According to the “Royal central” website, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and her sister Princess Christina joined His Majesty the King on a visit to the exhibition.

During the tour, led by Gallery Commissioner Bronwyn Griffith, the King and Princess Christina – who wrote a famous book about her grandmother – shared stories about Princess Margaret, who was born in Connaught.

The exhibition takes place in the royal palace on the grounds; Crown Princess Margaret lived with her husband, future King Gustav VI Adolf, and the couple’s five children.

In the gallery, visitors can enjoy items from the archives and objects from the royal collections belonging to Crown Princess Margaret. The exhibition also displays costumes from theatrical performances in which Crown Princess Margaret participated or arranged for her.

The exhibition is open to the public from 6 June until 30 September.

The King’s speech on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition

During the inauguration, His Majesty the King delivered a speech in which he said: “Today I am pleased to open a new exhibition here at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. An exhibition that is, in fact, close to my heart personally. Within the family, my grandmother, Crown Princess Margaret, was called Daisy.” She is a very talented person with a strong luster. She had a real interest and commitment in a variety of fields: arts, sports, social work and horticulture.”

His Majesty continued: This summer, many of the royal castles will open their doors for visits as usual. In this way, I hope that many, even in a year like this, will have the opportunity to experience our common cultural heritage. Those who want to be outdoors can also use the castle’s open gardens. Hopefully there will be enough sunshine for both the kids and the flowers.”

Princess Margaret

Crown Princess Margaret, nicknamed “Daisy” by family and friends, was active in many major societal causes of her time and campaigned for children, civil defense, disabled rights, and, during World War I, for the survival of prisoners of war.

She was very popular in her life and was deeply saddened when she died of a sudden illness in 1920 at the age of 38 while her husband was still heir to the throne of Sweden. He became king thirty years after her death.

Since childhood as a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, Margaret has interests in art, sports and gardening. She published garden books, laid the foundation for Sovereux Castle garden, skated and was an attacker on her own team.
